February 20, 2012Young Professional Network : Kings Speech
February 17, 2012A few days ago I was asked to get ready to give a speech in front of my peers on the Chamber Board to represent the new Young Professional Network. I have to admit, I got a little nervous once I realized who I had to speak to. But then I thought of a movie I recently watched, The King’s Speech. He was a king with a wretched speech impediment and was reluctant to get treatment. Spoiler alert, at the end of the movie he learned how to overcome his issue. So I said, if Colin Firth can do it, so can I.
Valentines Day : Let’s talk about LOVE
February 14, 2012This year for Valentines Day, I wanted to do something different. Instead of posting images of roses and chocolate in the shape of hearts, I wanted to share with you real PhotOle love. I asked past clients Elise and Blake to answer a few questions about their love. I wanted them to write the first thing that came to mind and they weren’t allowed to share their answers. So in honor of all things sweet and true love, here are their notes.
When did you meet?
E: We met in Psychology class at HACC in 2005.
B: The fall semester of 2005 in a Psychology class. But started dating September 7th.

What’s the best piece of advice you gave each other?
E: Live for today because you never know if tomorrow will come.
B: She has always encouraged me to try harder than I want to and achieve more than I think I can.

What are your favorite activities to do together?
E: We really don’t have any activities we do together, we are both really busy with school and work. Now it’s hard to find time for “activities”. Unless you count running errands then we do that all the time : )
B: Watching TV and running errands together.

What’s one thing each of you knows about your partner that no one else does?
E: Now if I said what I knew, then I wouldn’t be the only one who knows anymore.
B: Nothing; she is an open book; true to herself in front of all.

Any sweet nicknames?
E: Blakerd
B: Sweet heart and honey.

What quality do you love most in your partner?
E: He listens to me and helps me to become a better person than I would be without him in my life.
B: Her perseverance and dedication to all things.

Without saying it, how does your partner show you he/she loves you?
E: The fact that he puts up with my crap!! : )
B: By staying with me.

February 6, 2012Vendor Interview : Belle Soeur
February 3, 2012Three weeks ago I attended a vendor luncheon in Baltimore. I’m not a fan of passing out cards because I never connect with a person with just their business card. After the meeting I received an email from Alison at Belle Soeur, her message was personal I could tell she was passionate about her business. With that email I setup a meeting to find out more. Here you are!

What is your name?
My name is Alison.
What do you do?
We offer hair and makeup services. Anything from super sexy blow outs to airbrush makeup applications. Although we specialize in bridal work, we also do pageants, proms and any special event styling.
What’s the name of your business?
It’s Belle Soeur, meaning Beautiful Sister.
How did you come up with the name?
A fluke. Seriously, I took french for a number of years and my sister and I started the business so it seemed natural.
What makes your business unique?
We are a very down to earth group of women who have super human skills. We make people pretty. Things that make us different? Well besides being good at what we do, we are able to handle larger parties or smaller parties in a more efficiant time frame because of our staff. We also try to help our clients relax. We come with sparkling water, champagne glasses, strawberries, magazines, etc. Its a stinking special day. We are also very through. Our trials can take up to 3 hours. We like to make sure our clients are 100% sure about the look for their wedding. We like to give them the chance to try something different if they aren’t sure.
I love your logo, what was your inspiration?
Haha, I made it myself. I just wanted something clean, fresh looking and modern. I’m too type A to like anything the graphic designers made.
Your business has been feature in many places, how do you stay so humble?
Oh humble. boy. Thank you. Um, I feel like there is still so much to do. So many mountains to climb, clients to wow. I’ll stop being humble when I reach the top I guess! lol. I think it is because I feel like I am trying so hard to prove to everyone that hairstylists and makeup artists are talented and viable.
How many people work with you?
We have 10 girls at the moment. The girls on my staff are Caitlin, Jen, Gabriela, Katy, Martha, Jayde, Shana, Danielle, Meagan and Melanie.
Are you friends outside of work?
Absolutely. I love each of my artists in a unique way. One is my sister, most have been on our staff since the beginning. They will always hold a special spot in my heart. I wouldn’t have anything with out them.
What do you do for fun?
Ah, fun? -Work. That doesn’t count, huh? I honestly don’t do much outside of work as you probably know owning a business is quite time consuming. When the weather gets better I think I may lease a horse and do a little trail riding. I like to read.. Talk about work?
Any last words?
Oh, I just wish people knew how beautiful they are. Just as they are. Working in this field has shown me how insecure the public is. We just enhance what is out there. I wish more women appreciated their own beauty. Quirks and all.
